Home About Me Ask a Question!

What was dinner time like when you were a child?

We ate dinner at the same time every night unless dad had to work late then we waited until he came home.  We ate all together sitting at the table.  There was no television or radio to distract us as we ate.  We actually talked to each other unless the food was exceptionally good then we were too busy eating to talk.  We weren't allowed to complain about what we were served.  I did once and got a spanking from my dad.  While he was spanking, he was explaining how hard mom worked to cook the meal and we should appreciate her efforts.  It was a rare occurance that the food wasn't good.  Mom was an excellent cook and baker.
Our meals were healthy.  We ate a lot of vegetables and fruit.  Dad had a huge garden and mom froze, canned or pickled what he grew. During the summer, we might have a dinner of only vegetables.  Nothing could have tasted better than produce eaten within minutes of picking.
When I was very young, I remember that we had a wood stove and a kerosene stove in the kitchen.  Mom would use the wood stove for cooking and the kerosene stove for baking.  She said the kerosene oven held the temperature better. What wonderful things came out of that oven.  Bread, cookies, pies, sweet rolls and cakes.  She loved to bake and we loved to eat.  Many times the cookies would be gone before the next batch was baked.  Doughnuts were made on the stove and they were gone before they cooled.  And I, as a silly child, thought store packaged cookies were better than home made.  I lusted for Oreos.  Now, they don't taste good to me but then they were a rarity and the old story about the forbidden fruit tastes the best.
Eventually, she got an electric stove but she still kept the kerosene to bake with.  The kerosene disappeared one day.  Maybe it didn't work anymore or they were tired of carrying kerosene or maybe they wanted the space it took for a different purpose.   I don't remember and there is no one left alive to ask.
Dinner time always remained the same.  We all gathered at the table and ate what was prepared there were no special foods cooked and we learned to like everything except oysters.  But, mom and dad didn't object to that since they loved oysters and oysters were expensive.
