Did you always have a telephone? Do you have a cell phone?

No I didn't always have a phone.  I think we got a phone when I was 8 or9.  Dad didn't want one in the house but finally gave in after several emergencies.  It sat on the desk in the dining room.  To make a call you would have to ring the operator and tell her the number you wanted and wait to be connected.  It was also a party line where several families shared a number and were distinguished by the number of rings.  We were ring two.  So it was always exciting to hear the phone ring and stop after two.  Phone calls were rare at that time so getting a phone call was a high point in the day. We couldn't make long calls either because of the party line aspect.  Long calls blocked all the people on the line from making or receiving calls so we had to be considerate of others.
Yes, I have a cell phone.  It is in the car.  It is turned off.  It is turned on when I need to make a call from the car.  I don't play games on it or have any apps.  It is there to make calls when I am away from home.  I don't take it into restaurants and play with it while I am with another person because that is rude.  I don't walk around supermarkets with it stuck to my head.  It is a convenience that I didn't have when I was growing up and that is all it is a convenience not a necessity.  I try to enjoy where I happen to be at the moment and whomever I happen to be with.    I may never be there or with them again.
