As a child, I didn't have any chores. Mom, bless her, wouldn't let us do anything in the house. Consequently, I didn't learn to cook, bake, clean or do laundry. When I got married, my husband had to suffer through a lot of badly prepared food. I had learned a little bit about cooking in the 4H club. I knew how to make biscuits but how long can you live on biscuits. I knew how to make beds because of an aunt how showed me. I learned ironing from the same aunt. Home Ec in high school helped me solidify my knowledge of biscuit baking and sewing that I had also learned in 4H. We had to volunteer for chores. Yes, that is what I did. Usually, Dad would always accept volunteers to do outside work especially in the garden. We helped pick strawberries, tomatoes, corn and green beans. We were given a can of kerosene in the spring to drown the potato bugs. He didn't want us to use the hoe since our aim wasn't always on target and we didn't know a plant from a weed. Dad made and installed eavetroughs and I helped him assemble them but couldn't go to install them because girls didn't do that. He let my brother go with him even though he would never help with the preparations. We learn about discrimination early.
As to what chores I do now, since I live alone I am responsible for all of them except mowing the lawn and taking the trash to the road. At least, I know the only messes I have to clean are of my own making and if I don't feel like doing them right away, I know they will be waiting for me when I feel more like Taking care of them.
