Did you get an allowance as a child? If so, how much?

No I didn't get an allowance as a child.  I don't think any of my friends did either.  If we wanted to go uptown to get candy or a soft drink, we would look for refundable bottles and redeem them for the deposit which was two cents.  When we found enough bottles, we would walk to the grocery store to redeem them and with the money received we would go the the restaurant/candy store/soda fountain and buy candy.  Most of the candy was a penny a piece and the soft drinks were a dime.  We loved to order suicide cokes.  The clerk would put a squirt of each flavor of syrup into the coke base.  It really didn't taste good but it was a show of courage to drink this foul concoction.
I lived in a small village and we were allowed to walk all over town without fear of being harmed.  Not like today when we have to fear for the safety of our children whenever they leave our sight.  When I was young, everybody looked out for everybody else and we knew more than half of the people in the town and they knew us.  Sometimes too well for our sake because if we did anything wrong mom would know before we got home.
