When my husband and I were first married, we were both working. He could walk to work so we didn't need two cars. That saved money. We lived on my salary and banked his which was considerably more than mine. I worked for a department store and recieved an employee discount. I was also privy to when items were going to be marked down. I was able again to save considerable amounts of money with this knowledge.
By these economies, we were able to purchase land and build a three bedroom brick house with a full basement after only two years of marriage. We did a lot of the work ourselves but had to subcontract the things that we couldn't do like plastering, bricklaying, and cement work. We had help from my dad who would come out to the house and tell us what needed to be done first and how to do it. We would have really struggled without his help. Some of the things we started we had to turn over to professionals to finish since they were taking so much time to be completed like the kitchen cabinets.
After the house was livable, we both started to work again after finding a neighbor who could take care of our baby. We started saving again since building the house had depleted our savings since we both had quit working. I had quit to have the baby and my husband to devote his time to building our home.
In about eight years, we had saved enough money to go into business with another couple. This is what we were able to do by saving our money.
