I really don't have a favorite book, rather, I have a series of favorite authors. My first favorite was Douglas. He wrote easy read novels about very romantic adventures and people. The second was Pearl Buck. Her novels were about life in China before the communist revolution. The Good Earth was made into a movie in the 30's. It was a faithful adaptation of the novel. Then came Orwell and Huxley. Many of their books have been made into movies. My favorite from this period was Animal Farm. In high school, I was required to read Dickens, Faulkner, Hemingway, and a host of others. From Hemingway, I would choose The Old Man and the Sea. Dickens A Tale of Two Cities. Faulkner The Sound and the Fury. And my favorite during that time was LesMiseables by Victor Hugo, the unabridged version with short essays from the author. Then came the Russian authors. I never made it through War and Peace but enjoyed so many other authors. Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky was one of my favorites. Be patient, it is a very long book but worth the time.
After high school, I continued to read. Russian authors were still my favorites. After I married and had children, my favorites were Dr. Seuss and other children's authors. Are You My Mother? and The Cat in the Hat were two of the favorites along with Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson.
Now that the children are grown I am reading Grisham, Crichton and Rowling. I think I have read all of their books. Non fiction reads are likely to be political or self help. Biographies are another genre that I find interesting.
Those books are my favorites but what are they about? They are about what I am and was interested in at the moment and my level of maturity. They are romance, science fiction, drama, mystery, and history. They are set in many different countries and times. They have taken me to those places and times and given me a better understanding of the world. I will never be able to go to all of those places bodily but have made many wonderful trips through the world in books.
