My uncle was mayor of the village where I lived. He was a good choice because he could talk to anyone. Money wasn't important to him so he couldn't be bribed. He had a wonderful sense of humor. One time he went to a conference for all the mayors in Illinois. When he returned, we asked him if he had met Mayor Daley and he said" Yes, he's just another SOB like the rest of us.". He wasn't easily impressed. He quit the job because of all the late night telephone calls asking him for favors or complaining about things he had no control over.
One of my cousins was elected to the Illinois House. Another honest person who served well.
