What were bathrooms like?

This question was asked by my youngest daughter.  Truthfully, she asked "What were toilets like?"  I think she will be disappointed by the answer because they were very much like they are today.  My earliest memories of the bathroom was that it was a separate room with a bathtub, lavatory, bureau for storing towels, and a commode( toilet, john, porcelain throne).  It had a flush handle like the present fixtures.  The floor was tiled as was the wall around the tub.
There was an outhouse in the backyard that Dad used when he was working in the garden.  It was a one seater made of unfinished wood on the outside.  And, yes, there was a cutout on the door.  I don't remember if it was in the shape of a half moon.  I do remember that it didn't smell too good for obvious reasons.  It stood in the same place by the garden until the day my brother and one of his friends thought it a good idea to cook apples in there and cooked the outhouse before the apples.  They both escaped before it was totally ungulfed in flames.  I never understood the charm of sitting in an outhouse nor the reasoning behind cooking in there.  They were boys and this was one of their minor escapades.
