My Mother was a baker so there were always cookies available for us to snack on. She, also, made donuts, sweet rolls, pies, cakes and bread. We were very fortunate in that respect. In the summer, we would snack on whatever was ripe in the garden. Our favorite was tomatoes. We would carry a salt shaker outside with us and pick a tomato and bite off the skin, salt it and munch with the juice running down our arms. In the spring, it would be strawberries and rhubarb. I still can't believe that I would eat raw rhubarb with salt. For those of you who don't know about rhubarb, it is sourer than any lemon I have ever eaten. I, also, don't remember having stomach problems. We would walk out into the country and find wild raspberries and eat them coming home with black mouths and tongues.
A big treat for us was going to visit one of Dad's cousins because her son always had Juicy Fruit gum and she always had Oreo cookies for the children who came to visit. I didn't know until much later that Mom's cookies were much better than the Oreos.
