This is by far the most difficult question. There have been so many birthdays and so many presents, how can I select one? Frankly, I don't remember my early years of clothes or underwear as presents. I have pictures of me on my second birthday hugging a doll and looking very unhappy so I shouldn't put that one in contention for a prize. Roller skates would have ranked way up there on the favorite list. I lived in roller skates for many years until my feet got too big and the skates wouldn't open any further. Mom and Dad were pleased when that happened since clamp on skates were very hard on shoes. How I loved to skate. There were sidewalks all through town so we weren't limited to the block or the neighborhood. We would clamp on those skates and we would be gone for hours traveling the length and breadth of the town except for crossing the railroad tracks. We weren't allowed to do that and it was difficult to do with skates on anyway. The We I refer to is my sister and I. Our favorite skating place was the church because there was a sidewalk that went from the road to the church made a left turn, a sharp right and then a sharp downgrade ending in another sharp left. Pretty soon we weren't slamming into the brick of the church at the end of the sharp downgrade. But. again, I digress.
In my adult life, I had five favorite birthday gifts but they weren't on the day of my birth but on the day of their birth. My children. One time I got two on the same day. Double bonus. Much later there were more gifts as my children had children. Sometime in the future, I may have the joy of seeing great grandchildren. I can wait for that since the grandchildren are still young themselves.
